It’s hard to identify the contemporary theological liberal movements because they are shrouded in traditionally conservative language and hidden in ostensibly conservative institutions.
Here are a few key identifiers:
1. Talk big ”gospel” but small Bible.
2. Imply that Jesus wanted everyone to be nice and get along rather than fight for what is good and true.
3. Prefer to use power and administrative coercion rather that biblical argument and persuasive preaching.
4. Like secret meetings and strategic cabals; lead mainly through gossip and innuendo.
5. Hate the Ten Commandments. Or really any laws of God. Or any restriction upon their authority.
6. Sexuality is very conservative but don’t want the church or God to take anyone else’s sexuality very seriously. Usually presented as being gospel centered or grace centered or Christ centered but a cover for licentiousness and the compromise of historic church standards of righteousness.
7. Will tend to ramble on about grace and inclusion a lot when nobody really knows what they’re talking about.
Jesus spoke mainly to identification through faith and behavior and the exclusion of those lacking either.
8. Will complain about the Christian making the state the messiah and having faith in man for their salvation because they care about their community or want to vote in an election.
9. Will try to blunt a Christian conservative’s zeal for public order and the godly administration of justice by calling their spirituality into question.
How spiritual could you be if you’re worried about crime and inflation?
They are frankly a little tricky. The liberals in the church have never been strong on saying exactly what they mean but the essence is this: if they are against Godliness they’re against the God it’s named after.
Another awkward but time honored ploy is that if you’re concerned about godly biblical morality YOU will be accused of being a liberal; that you’re compromising justification, faith alone, free grace, or some other goofy game for getting the Jesus of the Bible out of the business end of Christianity.
