C.S. Lewis: The Cure for What Ails You

C.S. Lewis: The Cure for what Ails You

In Response to a friend,

Good to hear from you. I haven’t seen the Zeitgeist movie but some friends of mine did a radio show that we put up on the www.apologetics.com website. If you go to the “radio” tabs you should find it there. I have not actually heard this show so all that I am saying is that it might be helpful. You might like to hear some of the other shows that we do there. We get some great guests that deal with all of the nook and cranny types of apologetic and philosophical questions that you seem to be dealing with.

We just did a review of the “Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed” movie that has produced tremendous response. It includes an interview with Logan Craft, one of the movie’s producers. A remarkable thinker in his own right. Next week we will be doing a review of “Prince Caspian” with a real focus on the life and thought of C.S. Lewis. We will have a few first rate experts on Lewis for that show, including Donald McConnell, the Dean of Trinity Law School.

The reason I bring this up, is because I see you as very much a literary man. You’re a writer, interested in the arts, music, poetry, self expression, knowledge, etc. You’re kind of a Da Vinci type and people like you always have little trouble in the world. You’re just not as insensitive as the rest of us can be and that can be a burden as much as a benefit. Well, so was Lewis.

Now, we need to get past the fact that he wrote some children’s books. They were cute little things that he wrote but certainly neither his most important nor effective thought. His books like “the Abolition of Man” and such are right up your alley. Not only this but they have been read to great delight by Kings, Presidents, Skeptics and Artists of every configuration for many years. No one, I think, better dealt with the problems of good and evil, even as lived out in this life, with greater compassion and thoughtfulness than Lewis. There are many that I think might have been superior theologians or philosophers, since he was neither, but at the end of the day, who wrote with more passion and beauty? He was not only an accomplished academic scholar; he was an accomplished human being. So a little time with Lewis’ “adult works” we might call them for lack of a better descriptive, might be just what you are looking for.

Really, there can be no problem of evil, unless there is evil, and materialistic, anti-personal, animalism has no room within its worldview for an evil to question. The question itself implies its answer.

All the best,

Christopher Neiswonger

  3. “…who wrote with more passion and beauty?”

The beauty of C.S. Lewis…What touches me about the Chronicles of Narnia are that they reach the inner child inside my soul. Every man’s heart resonates to a different chord and I find the books, although written for children, full of truth and wisdom based on the interpretation of Holy Scriptures themselves. What inspires me is how Lewis makes Jesus Christ come alive through his brilliance in expression. I can feel the lions mane as Lucy holds on to the strength of Christ. I can feel the earth tremble as the King stands and roars on His throne. I can feel the darkness all around me as the struggle of good vs. evil wages war around me. In a generation of World of Warcraft and fantasy, the Chronicles of Narnia are even more important today than ever before. I feel called by God to write at least one children’s story in my lifetime and I find C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia simply brilliant and inspired by God.
